I want to start this new thread for everybody interested in the possibilities to power his boat ( sail or power or kayak ) temporary by a traction kite.... The kite is a one-design planing dingy, self-bailing, easy righting for 2 people or as a single-handler. planes easily. well made, sturdy, with boom vang, out- and downhauls for sail control, not a board boat like a laser or sunfish.. Kite is my own boat, co-owned with colin henwood who built her. she is a 21ft trailer sailer constructed from 9mm marine plywood sheathed in glass cloth and epoxy. with an all up weight of 750kgs she can be comfortably trailed behind a 2litre family car. draft with centreplate and rudder raised is just 10inches (250mm),….
Kites are no longer just for leisurely days at the beach. a promising enviro-enterprise to watch, kiteship is a wind-power-tech company proposing the use of massive sea kites to reduce the amount of. Kite sailing yacht. the person who designed this knows nothing about sailboats or kites. the boat would be leaning toward the kite if it was attached where it is on the drawings, and the other renderings show the keel at the extreme rear of the boat in back of the attachment point of the kite. with that setup the boat could only go downwind. It is almost impossible to design a kite, rigging, attachment system and even to build the boat itself strongly enough to take this level of overpull without breaking. one answer is to just undersize the kite by a large factor so that it's max. pull will be within line and boat limits- but then the average performance will be dismal..
